MATHCOUNTS®

The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase the interest and involvement in mathematics among all middle school students in order to assist in developing a technically litereate population essential to U.S. global competitiveness and the quality of life.

The North Piedmont Chapter of the Professional Engineers of North Carolina sponsors a MATHCOUNTS competition for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students every year in February.  The North Piedmont Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition is open to students attending school in Rockingham, Randolph, Guilford, and Alamance counties of North Carolina. The top students from the chapter competition qualify to compete at the state competition.  For more information see the FAQ below, or request information with our feedback form.  For a limited time new schools can request free registration.

When does MATHCOUNTS start?

The school coaching season begins at the start of the school year.  Registration is due in December.  The competition season begins in the winter when participating schools administer the school competition and select up to eight students (i.e. one team of 4 and up to 4 individuals) to compete at chapter competitions in February.  Winners progress to state competitions in March.  The top four scorers and top coach earn the privilege to represent their state at the national competition in May or June.

Can students participate as "alternates"?

Only if another student must drop out of the competition.  The school's competition is intended to select students to represent the school equal to the number registered (up to 4 team members and 4 individuals).  Coaches may also identify "alternates" in the event that one or more of the selected students is unable to compete.  If this occurs, then at the discretion of the coach an alternate student may be substituted to fill all seats for which the school has registered..  Substitutions may be made at any time before the start of the local (chapter) competition. At the local competition only the number of  students that the school has registered (team + individuals) will be allowed to compete.  Alternates may not compete at the local competition unless they are substituting for another student.

Can students attending private and home schools participate?

Yes, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from any school may participate.  Homeschool coaches must complete an afidavit verifying that the students from the homeschool are in either the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and that the homeschool complies with applicable state laws.  Schools with eight or fewer students in each of the 6th, 7th and 8th grades are designated as small schools, and are permitted to combine to form a MATHCOUNTS team.  Only schools from the same or adjacent PENC chapters within a state may combine to form a team.  The combined team will compete in the chapter where the coach's school is located.

What is the difference between team members and individuals?

MATHCOUNTS is structured so that every student competes in the individual rounds at the chapter MATHCOUNTS competition whether they are registered as a team or as an individual.  Therefore, individuals and  team members are all representing their school, and they are all competing to qualify for the state MATHCOUNTS competition as individuals.  By registering four individuals in addition to the four team members a school doubles its chances to send a student to the state competition.  The only difference between individuals and team members is that the team competes in an official team round.  The top teams at the chapter competition will qualify for the state MATHCOUNTS competition as a team.  At the chapter competition the individuals will participate in an unofficial team round for "fun", but these team tests will not be scored.
